It is fundamental to differenciate between two kinds of piles, internal and external. Outside of the distal end of the anal canal these external piles can be found. Mostly they present as varicosities of those venous blood vessels which serve draining the area of the inferior rectal arterial blood vessels. With swelling and irritation, these piles can become very painful. An important characteristic for external piles is the fact that they tend to cause thrombosis. Through the rupture of a vein, a blood clot developes and turns the vein into a thrombosed hemorrhoid. A thrombosis is a generation of thrombi blood clots, which park inside a vessel and diminish blood perfusion in the affected vessel. Blood clots blocking up substantial circulative areas of the heart, lung, or brain tissue are extremely critical. These clots, migrating into other parts of the body, are also called emboli embolus, singular.
